Collaborate with ESD to develop sustainable biocoke from bio-based raw materials

ESD

As part of Sustainable Industry Challenge – Chemport Edition and ESD are looking for innovative solutions to develop biocoke to specification for use in an industrial process to replace petroleum coke. This concerns the production of silicon carbide, in which petroleum coke is used as a raw material. Through the use of sustainable biomass, ESD-SIC strives to make a major step towards making silicon carbide more sustainable, reducing fossil CO2 emissions, reducing odor, reducing SO2 emissions and, in addition, expanding purchase options in a changing market. Therefore ESD is looking to partner with companies that develop bio-based raw materials that could be used as input for the biocoke process.

ESD-SIC is an independent subsidiary of the German company REF-Processing GmbH. In its Delfzijl facility, ESD-SIC produces high-grade silicon carbide (SiC) under strict environmental requirements. This makes ESD-SIC the world’s most environmentally friendly producer of SiC. ESD-SIC has had its headquarters in Delfzijl since 1973 and employs about 100 people.

TOTAL PRIZE MONEY: €100.000

AND INVALUABLE ACCESS

TO THE BIGGEST INTERNATIONAL INDUSTRIAL COMPANIES IN THE Chemport Europe region.

The Challenge

We are looking for startups and scaleups that want to collaborate with ESD to develop a more sustainable alternative to petroleum coke, which is used in the production of silicon carbide (Sic). Through the use of sustainable biomass, ESD-SIC aims to reduce the SO2 emissions and odor which is evident in petroleum coke (due to sulfur). We are looking for scalable and economically viable raw materials that could be used in input for the production of biocoke and thereby reduce the carbon footprint within the sector. The following directions are of interest:

BIObased raw materials

Materials that are economically viable and scalable to use as input for the production of biocoke. This could be different types of gases or plant-based materials.

WASTE CAPTURE

Technologies that could capture waste from current processes (eg oil production) and reuse as raw material for the production of biocoke, thereby having a cradle to cradle principle.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU

  • Pilot contract with ESD to validate your solution and scale up if successful
  • Access to ESD’s facilities like labs, pilotplants, application tests and more.
