The Northern Netherlands are hosting a large concentration of electricity  production, electricity and gas infrastructure and Europe’s largest onshore oil & gas fields. For almost 70 years, the Northern Netherlands region – also called Energy Valley – has been a European reference for energy innovation and knowledge. The Northern Netherlands is actively building on the green industry of the future. Hydrogen has a vital role to play in this transition, both as an energy carrier and as feedstock.

The region is perfectly positioned and willing to develop an integrated green H2 economy. There is an extensive portfolio of H2 projects underway with an estimated CAPEX valuation of € 2,8 Billion, which involves all elements of the value chain from the sourcing of feedstocks to production, transport distribution and end-use across heat, power, industry and mobility applications. The ambition is  supported by a strong regional knowledge/educational-base and innovation infrastructure. For example, at the Hydrohub, sustainable hydrogen technology can be tested.

The Northern Netherlands has a large-scale existing and planned supply of renewable electricity, including onshore and offshore wind as well as solar, as well as strong interconnections with larger wind-based areas in Denmark and Germany. The Northern Netherlands is a hub for the electricity grid in the Netherlands: various power stations, the landing of interconnectors and offshore wind farms and an existing high-voltage grid to the rest of the Netherlands. The green H2 economy, however, is a new market that needs innovation to overcome technical, economic, regulatory and societal challenges. Therefore, we innovative scale-ups that can add value to the H2 value chain.

the Challenge

Below, a non-limitative overview of challenges is provided per stage in the value chain:
